Attendance
& Punctuality
University of Wolverhampton Wednesfield Academy recognises the importance of attendance and the link with students’ progress.
At Wednesfield Academy, we expect that all students attend the academy every day and on time for the start of the academy day and their lessons. We take attendance very seriously; days off school soon add up and missing lessons makes it harder to catch up and students have to work harder when they return.
There are 175 non-school days a year for holidays and family time. Absence form the academy has a negative impact on a child’s education. High attendance is a priority at University of Wolverhampton Wednesfield Academy. Successful students have excellent attendance.
Unplanned Absence
Parents must notify the academy by 08:30 or as soon as possible on the first day and each subsequent day of an unplanned absence.
The Attendance Officer should be notified by a parental telephne call to the acacdemy’s absence line on: 01902 558222. Option 1 or 01902 558212.
Students should only be absent from the academy for a vaild reason, such as genuine illness or an academy arranged activity.
The following reasons for absence will not be authorided:
- Term time holidays
- Lateness caused by oversleeping or missing public transport.
- Looking after a sibling, pets, or unwell parents.
- Minding the house.
- Birthdays.
- Refusing to attend school when a student has reported a concern which the academy has not been able to investigate and provide appropriate support for.
Medical or Dental Appointments
We encourage parents/carers to make medical and dental appointments out of the academy day where possible. Where this is not possible, the student should be out of school for the minimum amount of time necessary. Should a student have an appointment during the academy day, attendance is expected prior to and following attendance of the appointment. Should a student not be well enough to return following an appointment, a parent/carer is required to inform the Attendance Officer.
Lateness and Punctuality
A student who arrives late but before the register has closed will be marked as late, using the appropriate code. We request that parent/carers inform the academy of the reason for the lateness in writing or verbally by calling into the academy.
Where punctuality is a concern, the academy will employ strategies, including but not limited to: academy detention, punctuality reports, an Early Help Assessment and support from the Educational Welfare Officer.
Parent/carers will be informed of lateness through notifications from a student information system or by letter if there are repeated absences. Please be aware that consistent repeated lateness may be marked as a U code on the register which will affect your child’s attendance percentage and the Education Welfare Officer will be informed.
Requested leave from School
The Headteacher may not grant any leave of absence to students during term time unless they consider there to be 'exceptional circumstances'.
Parents/carers will need to complete a leave of absence form in writing addressed to Mrs Carpenter, Headteacher.
The academy considers each application for term-time absence individually, considering the specific facts, circumstances, and relevant context behind the request. A leave of absence is granted entirely at the Headteacher’s discretion.
